Ever thought about being a DJ (Disc Jockey)? Well there are generally 3 different types of DJ:
· Club DJ · Radio DJ · Mobile DJ
Club DJ
The main ingredients to becoming a club DJ, is the ability to mix to records at the same speed (Beat Mix), and to be able to make them blend from one record to the other, whilst keeping the feel and groove of the music going, or lifting it to another level. To learn to beat mix is relatively easy, but having an understanding of what the crowd on the dance floor want really only comes with experience. Obviously the better your selection of music is the more the people on the dance floor will respond. Being a club DJ is truly great fun, having hundreds of people shout and whistle at you when you dropped a new record well, really is a feeling to be savoured. The best place to practice this is at home, once you become good, make a tape and then go and see club promoters, usually they let you start with an opening slot on a night, and as you get better and more well known you'll find yourself being moved to the better time slots in the night, and receiving more money for it. Once again you need a little ability to mix records but it is not as important as a club DJ. What is important here is the ability to be able to talk to people (the audience) and keep the conversation flowing and interesting. At the same time you have to be able to coordinate yourself, to start/stop the music for adverts, etc. Once again this can be practiced a lot at home. Once you feel you have the hang of it then the best places to start out are on hospital radio stations, big store/mall radio stations, etc. You may even be lucky enough to start on a local radio station. As you get better and more experienced you can then move up to bigger, national networks. Mobile DJ This is a kind of cross between the above two types of DJ. Here you have to have the ability to mix music live to a crowd of people on the dance floor, as well as a little talking to tie between some records (for announcements, etc). Once again, practicing at home is the first step. Once you've done this you'll need to invest in some mobile DJ equipment, then advertise appropriately and then hopefully you'll get some work. |
